Lot 77 comes to us from an estate vineyard located in the gravelly loam soils of the west side Rutherford benchlands just off Hwy 128. Up until recently, this bottling was priced at $175/bottle and you can still find it in the market at that price for past vintages but prices have largely come down. The family-owned and operated winery is just up the road and has multiple estate vineyards around the region — in fact, we chose this lot over their southern Rutherford vineyard location. Stalwart producer to say the least, with deep pockets and a spare-no-expense approach to vineyard management and wine production.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby in the glass. Dense, packed bouquet of blackcurrant, black cherry, plum and raspberry notes mingle with graphite, minerally loam underpinned with olive and mocha notes and pretty rose petal halo. Deep and unctuous on the palate, exceptionally balanced with robust, chewy tannins carrying a juicy cherry and raspberry midpalate finishing with blackberry jam and chocolate notes in a magic-carpet ride finish. Seamless, deftly balanced with purity and density in equal proportion — exceptionally well-made and archetypal Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon.

Claude’s Source Guess: Cakebread Cellars — Benchland Select Cabernet Sauvignon, West Side Rutherford Bench
Cakebread Cellars fits every geographic and biographical clue Cam provides. Founded in 1973 by Jack and Dolores Cakebread, the winery sits at 8300 St. Helena Highway (Hwy 29/128 corridor) in Rutherford — literally “just up the road” from the benchland vineyard. Their Benchland Select Cabernet Sauvignon sources from “the gently sloping western benchlands of Rutherford and Oakville” in gravelly loam soils, matching Cam’s description almost word for word. The Benchland Select previously retailed at $175 and has softened to ~$125-155 in the current market, fitting Cam’s “previously $175/bottle, now $125+” observation precisely.
The “southern Rutherford vineyard location” Cam passed on almost certainly refers to Cakebread’s Suscol Springs Ranch — located in the cooler southeastern reaches of Napa Valley, retailing at $130-140 — which Cam evaluated and declined in favor of the west-side Benchland Select program. Two programs, one family winery, two distinct geographic locations: exactly the scenario Cam describes.
The family has operated the estate for over 50 years — the very definition of “stalwart producer” — with multiple estate vineyards spanning Rutherford, Howell Mountain, Suscol, Anderson Valley, and Carneros. “Deep pockets and spare-no-expense approach” is consistent with a family that has built one of Napa’s most recognized brands over five decades.
The one tension point is Cam’s blend — 92% Cab/5% PV/3% Malbec — while Benchland Select is documented as 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. This likely reflects a specific barrel selection outside the standard finished program, or minor blending additions Cam made himself from available components before bottling.
WB’s current guess of Whitehall Lane is a reasonable alternative — also family-owned, also on the Rutherford Hwy 29 corridor, also with multiple estate vineyards. The main tension there is that Whitehall Lane’s single-vineyard programs have historically been priced below the $175 threshold Cam cites.
